Over the ages, superheroes in various forms have been speaking to humanity in togas, robes, and now tights. They speak to us about the human condition. They help us work through our fears and failures to establish our goals and life plans.
Heroic Inspirations draws out rich lessons superheroes provide for our daily lives.
How does Superman teach us to deal with difficult people?
What do the X-Men tell us about balancing individual and communal identities?
What does Zatanna teach us about mourning?
Superheroes speak to these and many other life questions.
Michael Critzer has been researching and teaching on superheroes for over ten years. He holds an M.A. in English from James Madison University and an M.F.A. in Creative Writing from Spalding University. He spends more money on comic books than he should and hides them from his wife and daughter in their home in central Virginia.
“Amazing! Heroic Inspirations is full of insights, help, and hope that are so needed in our time. Michael Critzer has written a book that will expand the mind and nourish the heart of every superhero fan.”
-Brett Culp, award-winning filmmaker and director/producer of Legends of the Knight
“This inspirational book delves into what makes today’s most iconic superheroes tick, revealing why we love them and what we can learn from them. Michael Critzer’s Heroic Inspirations takes a heroic stance in pointing out the important role morality plays in defining modern superheroes. It focuses on a superheroes most important quality, their complex desire to do what’s right.”
-Scott Cranford, founder of HeroicWorld.com and Superman actor
“The triumphs and tragedies that make up the core basis of our favorite super heroes are analogous to the problems that many of us face every day, from anxiety and depression, to dealing with the after effects of trauma. By using the exemplars provided by these varied heroes, Michael Critzer is able to provide a framework that facilitates understanding and can help develop insight into the confusing, and potentially painful, experiences, thoughts, and emotions with which many struggle. It proves that superheroes can save others both on and off the page!”
-Karla M. Southern, event coordinator for Heroes Aren't Hard to Find and the Heroes Convention in Charlotte, NC
“What could be cooler than being able to take a class on how super heroes influence the world around us and what they mean in our lives, personally? How about a book that encompasses that wonderful course? Heroic Inspirations ties our favorite heroes and heroines with their own inspirations. Along the way, it teaches us some things about our own lives as well. If you thought comic books were just fun escapism, surprise! Michael Critzer shows us that you’ve been reading actual literature all along.”
-Steven H. Wilson, DC Comics writer and award-winning creator of The Arbiter Chronicles
“Superman – and Michael Critzer – are all about spreading positive energy and aspiring to do the right thing, each and every day…just because. Michael’s book is a refreshing reminder of why Superman continues to resonate with millions of people around this gorgeous globe of ours. “What would Superman do?” He does - and does it freely - with joy, courage, and fierce determination. He is someone to believe in…within ourselves. Thank you, Michael, for being a breath of fresh air under each of our red capes.”
